The Focus Trap: Why You’re Still Scattered (Even with a Plan)
Aug 28, 2025
And how to stop second-guessing your way through your business.
When Focus Feels Just Out of Reach
You’ve got a vision. A plan. Maybe even color-coded timelines.
So why do you still feel pulled in ten directions?
If you’ve ever blocked off time to work on your business—and then all you do is jump between new ideas, second-guess your decisions, or decide to do “just a bit more research”—you’re in good company.
This isn’t a productivity issue.
It’s not about time blocks or dopamine.
It’s about something deeper: internal misalignment.
True focus doesn’t come from better scheduling or other quick hacks.
It comes from clarity on the inside.
How I Lost My Compass in a Sea of Ideas
When I decided I wanted to make some overdue changes to my accounting practice, I did what most entrepreneurs do—I went looking for ideas.
I wanted to see how other accountants were doing it because I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel. I wanted to see what worked for others and then implement the changes my way. What started as some strategic Google searches turned into weeks of digital paper trail. Blogs. Downloads. Checklists. Books. Competing opinions. You name it, I found it.
Soon, I had mounds of notes and ideas. I was fortunate to have joined a mastermind group for accountants at that time. They helped me identify which “cookie cutter” ideas didn’t fit my business. This was a good exercise to eliminate those ideas that had been undoubtedly distracting me.
Only a handful of inspirational options remained. But I still couldn’t find the detailed focus I needed to sort through the ideas that were left. Still confused, I let it sit.
Some time later when I was relaxed, a clear vision came to me. It happened when I was least expecting, while I was vacuuming. Fresh ideas popped into my head, one after another, and they just felt right. This clarity flooded in at a time I wasn’t focused on my business. The pressure lightened as I re-centered on the kind of business I wanted to build. Oh, the excitement…..I had the beginnings of a roadmap! And more importantly, I finally started listening inward instead of looking outward for my inspiration.
Focus Isn’t the Starting Point—It’s the Byproduct
Most people chase focus as if it’s something you can force into being. But focus isn’t the thing you do first.
It’s what emerges when your energy and purpose are pointed in the same direction.
Here’s what that means:
- If your goals don’t match your deeper values, you’ll keep losing steam.
- If your decisions are shaped by what others are doing, you’ll question every move.
- If you consume more than you create, self-trust quietly erodes.
You can only focus when you trust your own compass.
You can only trust your compass when you stop tuning into everyone else’s.
Try This When You’re Feeling Scattered
The next time you feel unfocused, try this quiet reset:
1. Stop Looking for the Next Great Idea
Take a full 48 hours off from consuming advice. No articles, no videos, no tip-based content. Just observe what ideas naturally resurface when your mind isn’t being pulled in like 50 different directions.
2. Ask: “What’s Calling Me, Even If It’s Not Obvious?”
Sometimes clarity isn’t loud or prominent. Sometimes it’s a quiet voice in your head that you’ve been ignoring because it isn’t what everyone else is doing. Listen for your thoughts.
3. Name the One Question That’s Driving You Right Now
If it’s one thing I’ve learned, focus loves constraints. Instead of trying to solve everything, narrow in on the single question that will move you forward today. Let that question shape your actions this week.
The Real Work Required
Focus is sometimes disguised as effort, but really it’s about integrity.
When your attention, intention, and action align—clarity follows.
And when you have internal clarity, momentum is no longer a struggle.
