Beyond the Algorithm: Building a Social Media Presence That Feels Like You
Aug 21, 2025
When No One Is Watching
I started posting on social media for the first time back in April. I’ve been posting blog promo posts and business tips, shared with the hope they’d help someone.
Barely any likes.
Zero comments.
Pretty much silence.
When I tried to figure out the issue, Google searches turned up articles suggesting it was the algorithm. Maybe I wasn’t posting at the “right time,” or perhaps it would be better in another format.
But after speaking with so many people, I already knew the real issue deep down:
I am just getting started—and I haven’t built a following yet.
That’s the simplest way to put it.
And if you’re in the same place—just beginning, unsure if anyone’s listening—I want you to know:
You’re not doing it wrong. You’re building.
I wrote this blog as much for me as for you. I’m learning how to show up better on social media, and I’m going to follow the guidance in this post myself. Social media isn’t my thing—but I’m looking at it differently now.
Let’s talk about how to build a social presence that grows with you, not just one that performs.
1. Stop Broadcasting, Start Connecting
When I first posted, I wanted to show what I knew. But what I really needed was to be personable.
People don’t generally follow accounts just because they’re polished or perfect—they follow people who feel genuine and human, who speak their language, who make them feel seen.
Social media is about more than just content—it’s conversation and connection.
Start small:
- Share a short post about something you’re learning in real time.
- Reflect on a moment of doubt, growth, or curiosity.
- Ask your audience open-ended questions—even if only one person answers.
- Reply to every comment. Send thank-you messages when someone shares or saves a post.
That’s the foundation: showing up for the conversation, not just the broadcast.
And when you do that consistently, something amazing begins to happen: people start to notice. Quietly at first—but eventually, they engage, they follow, they stay.
2. Trust Is Built One Post at a Time
No one owes us their attention. We earn it—through consistency, clarity, and care.
We don’t earn it by posting every day, but by posting with intention.
Trust grows when your posts sound like you—when they reflect your values, your vision, and your why.
👉 If you're still figuring out what that voice sounds like, this blog on cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset can help you get grounded in who you're becoming—and how that shapes the way you show up.
Here’s something to try:
- Pick 2 or 3 content themes that matter most to both you and your audience (examples are purpose-driven entrepreneurship, self-management, growth)
- Create a rhythm: Maybe one post a week is a “lesson learned,” and one is a quick encouragement or story
- Stay the course. Even if engagement is low now, you’re building a familiar voice, and conditioning your audience to trust it.
If that feels slow, remember that most people don’t build trust in a day. They build it over weeks and months of quiet consistency.
You’re not behind—you’re early.
3. Relevance Doesn’t Require a Following
It’s easy to believe social media only matters if you have a large audience. But meaning isn’t about numbers—it’s about relevance.
Relevance is:
- When someone sees your post and relates to it
- When one person clicks your link or replies to your story
- When a future client scrolls back later and sees you’ve been walking the walk all along
You don’t need thousands of followers to attract clients or opportunities. You need to show up in a way that aligns with your message and your mission.
Your audience might not be here yet. But they’re out there. And when they find you, they’ll be able to see who you are—because you’ve already been putting your posts out there.
I’m reminding myself of that, too.
4. Learn as You Go
It’s a common belief that you have to master social media before using it for business. It’s what I once believed.
But the truth? You’ll learn the most about anything by using it hands on.
So here’s what I’m doing:
- Posting imperfectly, and not overthinking
- Choosing connection over clever writing
- Learning what resonates by testing and adjusting
If you’ve been putting off social media until you feel “ready,” I invite you to start. I’m right here along with you, learning as I go.
A following won’t happen overnight. But if you build your voice with care, lead with value, and keep showing up, your following will grow. Your people will find you.
👉 If you've ever struggled with staying consistent when results are slow, this post on resilience in entrepreneurship offers a fresh take on pushing through doubt and showing up for yourself—even before the results arrive.
And when they do, they’ll discover someone worth following.
A Quiet Beginning Is Still a Beginning
I don’t have a big social media following yet. But I’m showing up anyways.
Because what I’ve come to realize is that nobody can follow you if you’re not visible.
This is about building a social media following that is grounded—through attention, trust, and relevance. This all takes time and patience. Chasing trends and gaming the algorithm can come later.
So if you’re starting small, silently, or awkwardly—make sure it’s meaningful. You’re not alone.
There’s no instant path to visibility. But there is a trustworthy one: showing up as you are. Be consistent. Keep offering value. And trust that one day, you’ll look back at those early posts and realize…..that’s where it all began…..ONE. POST. AT. A. TIME.
