Why I Almost Gave Up After 15 Years in Business (and What I Finally Learned)
Sep 04, 2025
I almost walked away from my business after more than 15 years.
Not because I didn’t love being my own boss. Not because I wasn’t capable. But because I was exhausted. I was overwhelmed in my personal life, curveball after curveball, and things that I once took for granted now felt dark and heavy.
The Personal Wake-Up Call
When I finally found clarity in my own life, it felt like someone had flipped on a light switch. I got the support I needed, set clear priorities and boundaries, focused only on what really mattered, and created space to simply breathe.
Over time, I started to feel more grounded and aligned on a personal level. But here’s the catch: my business didn’t keep up. Sitting down to work felt jarring, like stepping back into an old version of myself. Instead of lifting me up, my business was pulling me back down.
That contrast was impossible to ignore. My mindset had grown, but my business was still running on the same old patterns — unclear, reactive, and unfocused. In other words, while I had moved forward, my business had been left behind.
It wasn’t until I applied the same clarity to my business that it finally caught up — and that’s when things really began to change.
If you’d like to know more about the personal journey behind Ready Set Grow, I share more of my story here.
When Business Mirrors Life
Once that light switched on, I couldn’t ignore it in business.
- I had been chasing new ideas without committing to a clear plan
- I was avoiding decisions because I didn’t trust myself to make the right ones
- I was working harder, but not smarter — I was “busy” but getting nowhere fast
Eventually, I came so close to giving up that I seriously considered going back to a full-time job. And that’s after more than 1.5 decades of working for myself.
I’m so glad I didn’t give in. The clarity and energy did come to me, and allowed me to spring my business forward.
Why Clarity Changes Everything
Here’s what I’ve learned:
Clarity doesn’t magically erase challenges, but it changes how you face them.
In fact, research consistently shows that clarity strengthens leadership and decision-making. Forbes calls it one of the most powerful tools leaders can develop.
When I got clear about what mattered most to me personally, I found the strength and perspective to eventually bring clarity into my business. And once that happened, my business shifted drastically:
- The overwhelm eased. I finally knew what to prioritize and what to let go.
- The second-guessing slowed down. Decisions didn’t feel like landmines anymore.
- The fog lifted. I stopped working on autopilot and started acting with intention.
Clarity gave me the focus and confidence to move forward with purpose — in both life and business.
The Program I Wish I’d Had from the Start
Looking back, I can’t help but wonder:
What if I’d had the tools to build clarity much earlier?
That thought wouldn’t leave me alone. Eventually, it became the seed that grew into my Ready Set Grow entrepreneurial training program.
You can read more about Module 1: Entrepreneurial Fitness here.
It’s the program I wish I’d had when I was starting out — the roadmap that helps new and aspiring entrepreneurs build clarity, confidence, and momentum right from the beginning. Because clarity is the foundation that makes everything else possible.
If You’re Just Starting Out…
You don’t need to wait 15 years (like I did) to figure this out the hard way.
Module 1: Entrepreneurial Fitness is in the final stages of creation to help you skip the detours and start strong. It will give you the structure, support, and skills you need to grow with confidence — without burning yourself out or second-guessing every move.
It’s not about working harder. It’s about finding clarity, building confidence, and creating a business that supports your desired life.
10-Minute Clarity Snapshot
Instructions: Set a timer for 10 minutes. Jot down your answers quickly without overthinking. The goal is not perfection — it’s clarity.
1. Drainers vs. Fuelers
- List 3 Drainers (what’s sapping your energy right now?)
- List 3 Fuelers (what consistently gives you energy, focus, or peace?)
2. Weekly Priorities
Circle or underline 3 things from your Fuelers list or current projects that you’ll prioritize this week.
3. One Boundary to Test
What’s one small “no” you can say, or one limit you can set, to protect your clarity?
4. Next Right Step
What’s the single most important action you’ll take in the next 24 hours to move forward with confidence?
✨ Tip: Revisit your Clarity Snapshot at the end of the week. Notice how even one reduced Drainer, one honored Boundary, and one consistent Fueler can change how you feel and lead.
